Adirondack furniture is rustic furniture that was first created in North America in the 1800s. It was originally made from hewn timber, bent branches and logs. Adirondack chairs were initially designed to rest more comfortably on mountainous inclines, to withstand nature’s harshest elements, to provide solace to inhabitants of national parks, and to harmonize with nature.

The notion of rustic furniture for outdoor use blossomed in the early 1900s when Thomas Lee began crafting outdoor furniture from planks of wood in order to provide relaxation for his family at their summer home on Lake Champlain. Lee’s Adirondack chair was designed with wide arm rests, a straight back and a slanted seat. After he received approval from his family members, Lee took his furniture into Westport and presented his new idea to the town carpenter, Harry Bunnell. Bunnell thought Lee had developed a superior invention that would prove to be extremely profitable during the spring and summer months, and went behind his back to a get a patent on the product. Bunnell experienced a lot of success courtesy of Lee, and some of his designs are still sold at extremely valuable price points today.

In recent times, the shape of the Adirondack chair has evolved to further accentuate solace. It can typically be found with a round back and a contoured seat for added comfort. Additionally, much of the Adirondack furniture on the market today is sold with a variety of accessory options, such as seating cushions and pillows, to emphasize relaxation. The wide arms on an Adirondack chair are ideal for food and beverage placement during outdoor gatherings. There are more than just chairs available in the Adirondack style today. The furniture selection has expanded into benches, porch swings, gliders, settees and rockers among many other unique seating options.

Most importantly, this unique design provides a classic, timeless appeal. At Adirondack Furniture Direct, we want to make sure that you’re providing your family and friends with the comfort and relaxation that they deserve.
